Life in the United States
Fifty states with very different landscapes, climates and costs of living, and Washington, D.C. as the capital.
What to expect
A quick picture of everyday life before you apply.
Cities
New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and the San Francisco Bay Area are the largest metropolitan areas. Outside big cities, life is usually car-dependent.
Climate
It varies enormously, from cold northern winters to hot, dry deserts and humid southern summers.
Healthcare
Healthcare is mostly private and paid through insurance, often provided by employers. Costs can be high, so visitors should buy travel medical insurance.
Education
The US has many of the world’s best-known universities. Tuition is high, and F-1 students must keep a full-time course load.
Work
Most US work visas need a sponsoring employer, and some categories have annual limits.
From Canada
Canadian citizens usually don’t need a visitor visa for the US, but permanent residents and other nationals living in Canada often do.
This is a general overview. Visa rules and requirements change often, so we confirm the current rules for your situation during your consultation.
