Life in Canada

The world’s second-largest country by area, with ten provinces, three territories and two official languages, English and French.

What to expect

A quick picture of everyday life before you apply.

Cities

Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and the capital, Ottawa, are the main urban centres. Most people live within a few hours of the US border.

Climate

Winters are cold across most of the country, with snow for several months. The west coast around Vancouver is milder and wetter. Summers are warm.

Healthcare

Healthcare is publicly funded and run by each province, and eligibility rules differ between provinces. Visitors usually need private travel medical insurance.

Education

Public schools are free for residents. Canada’s universities and colleges attract many international students, who pay higher tuition than domestic students.

Work

The economy is broad, from technology and finance to healthcare, trades and transport. Many employers value Canadian work experience and credentials.

Communities

Canada is highly multicultural. The Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga and Brampton, has large South Asian communities.
